The ‘Hottest’, most in-demand IT Skills for 2017

2017 is shaping up to be a great time be employed in the IT sector. The industry’s unemployment is low in comparison to other industries (between 2%-3%) and there are abundant opportunities for both IT professionals who are looking to ‘level up’ in their careers and for people who are looking to make a start in IT.

‘New Year, New Career’ is our motto for January and if you are considering making a change into the IT industry there is no better time than now.

Looking at the popular top skills list that we recently published as well as job search data that we’ve analysed from the last six months, we have picked out the 5 of the most in-demand IT skill areas for the first quarter of 2017. Enjoy!

360-2

1.) Network and Information Security Expert (or Ethical Hacker)
It comes as no surprise that Network and Information Security tops the list. This is an area where IT employers are really struggling to fill positions because of the lack of qualified experts. 360 GPS have some exciting plans in 2017 to address this issue – so be on the lookout for some upcoming news from us.

An information security expert’s role is to safeguard computer networks from unauthorised access, misuse, hacking, viruses or any other activity that harms a network or its users. The role also involves responding effectively to network attacks and minimising and containing any resulting damage. This role is becoming increasingly important and in-demand as our reliance on working within secure networks grows in both our personal and professional lives.

Foundation certifications such as MCSA and Cisco – CCNA: Security are an important first step to getting on the path to becoming a network security expert with more specialised certifications being required later on.

2.) Application Developer
App developers enjoy one of the lowest unemployment rates in the IT industry and the number of job offers for mobile app developers has more than doubled since 2015.

The demand for front-end developers and user experience (UX) engineers for mobile apps is also on an upward trend for with no signs of slowing down in 2017.

With the world consuming digital media through mobile devices 60% of the time in comparison to desktop devices, this is a great time to get involved in developing and designing mobile apps.

3.) Database Administrator
Database administration will be a ‘hot’ career choice in 2017 because of the growing interest in big data. Organisations have been gathering large quantities of information from their users and subscribers and now want to be able to use that data to make better decisions on their products and services. A database administrator builds a data map, gathers all the relevant data from different sources and produces a detailed report that analyses these results.

360-1

4.) Cloud Professional
In 2017 there will be a continued strong focus on moving IT systems and services to the cloud. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook have already invested billions of dollars on new data centres and server infrastructures to power their workloads. The industry will need more cloud professionals that are ready to work in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (Paas), and Software as a Service (SaaS) environments.

aung

5.) IT Project Manager
As the demand in all the above categories grows, the same will apply to Project Managers who can organise IT professionals into effective teams and deliver projects on time and within budget.

Certifications such as PRINCE2 and ITIL teach aspiring Project Managers effective methods of planning and organising resources and people. A successful IT Project Manager creates project plans, defines business and end-user requirements, sets priorities and to talks with developers about the technologies involved.

Effective communication and ensuring that the correct processes are followed across the project team are essential to succeed in this role.

If you’re thinking of entering into a career in IT, we hope this list has helped you to decide on a general direction. If you need further obligation-free advice or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact one of our IT career consultants. We wish you a happy new year and a successful 2017!

Why Microsoft’s Azure keeps attracting the IT industry

Microsoft Azure has been developing quickly ever since its release date, as it closes the gap with longtime industry leader Amazon Web Services and more distinguishes itself from competitors such as Google, IBM and RackSpace. Furthermore, according to Microsoft Investor Relations Q1 2017 the run rate for Azure linked with Office 365 and Dynamics CRM online is predicted to be greater than $13 billion. There is without any doubt an increasing demand among today’s industry for Azure, but what specifically is driving it?

iot-video-still-4-640x339

Any developer or IT professional can be productive with Azure. The combined tools, pre-built templates and managed services make life easier when you want to manage enterprise, mobile, web and IoT apps faster, utilising skills you already own and technologies you already know.

Moreover, Azure supports the largest selection of operating systems, programming languages, frameworks, tools, databases and devices. Run Linux containers with Docker integration; build apps with JavaScript, Python, .NET, PHP, Java and Node.js; build back-ends for iOS, Android and Windows devices. Azure cloud service supports the same technologies that millions of developers across the world and IT professionals already rely on and trust.

Some cloud providers force you to choose between your data centre and the cloud, but not Azure. It instinctively integrates with your existing IT environment through the largest network of secure private connections, hybrid database and storage solutions, and data residency and encryption special tools– so your assets are right where you need them.

How IT qualifications affect pay rates

The XpertHR Computer Staff Salary Survey is the largest UK salary survey for computer staff and has been issued regularly since 1968. It includes the CEL index and is recognised by the SFIA. Based on salary data from 195 companies on 66,786 individual employees, the survey includes basic pay rates and bonus payments. Salary tables can be explored by location and job function to provide precise pay data for particular IT roles and since all the dossier comes straight from corporation payrolls, it is solid and trustworthy.

it-salaries

This survey is published two times per year and displays how pay rates are influenced by IT qualifications and key abilities. The current data, released in June 2016, starts with the average salary for an entry level position in IT – £18k per annum. Entry-level positions are designed to give you the experience you may need for working in a specific industry. Once you have gained the required certifications and experience you may be able to move to a mid-level position that, according to the survey, includes a pay rate that ranges between 21k and 50k a year.

360-2

When you will have sufficient experience to begin a management position you will work closely with other experienced technologists as well as the Directors of the business on a range of infrastructure initiatives, covering telephony, networking, Active Directory, SQL and VMWare, with an income of 54k/82k each year.

IT function head is a person who has management authority over the entire department within a business, company, or other organisation. They have ongoing responsibilities, ensuring that goals and objectives align with the organisation’s comprehensive strategy and vision and they are paid quite a lot (between 81k and 128k a year).

IT director is the best paid position according to the survey. They earn between 120k and 176k a year. At this stage of their career, most of their work is not technical – it is basically related to communication, planning, and strategy. However, individuals employed as IT directors have to improve their knowledge, skills and advancement opportunities by looking for continuing education. Chief information officer and IT management graduate certificate programmes, as well as certificate programmes in project management, are also available.

Women in IT: Ways to Close the Gender Gap

Nowadays, equal opportunity is unthinkable without equal challenge. It is also a fact, however, we now have fewer women working in male-dominated industries such as IT, despite a variety of programmes and political correctness.

women-in-it-5

In reality, since the beginning children are treated differently. While boys are playing with Lego sets, girls received dolls. This trend continues until the university when the general public tries to convince girls that IT is too difficult for them, even when they show interests and inclination in maths and science.

Then, at work the more challenging technical problems are usually assigned to men, allowing them to rise to the challenge. Why? Are women and men not equally skilled? Nothing could be further from the truth, because studies have shown that women have some advantages over men in tech, such as attention to detail, they are multi-skilled, opportunity experts, and natural givers. Not to mention that women are generally more emotionally motivated at work.

women-in-it-4

In the past, IT jobs were viewed as populated by men in basements, but in today’s world, those views are officially ended: technology careers are interesting and women are keen on it.

However, according to Forbes the number of female CIOs is still low – around 9%. Something is definitely not working, in a period when girls include about 46% of the advanced placement calculus test takers, but only 80% of them do not end up taking a computer science class, clearly something is not working.

Several initiatives are trying to reverse this trend, such as Shine The Light, an international campaign that encourages people to boost the profile of incredible women around the world who are pushing boundaries using technology.

At 360 GSP we are committed to driving gender diversity in the workplace and we believe that when women are supported, encouraged, and funded to lead, they always excel. This is why you should think about a career in IT. To get more information you can visit our website to find out more about 360 GSP IT Training and Courses and contact us today on 020 8672 4151 or hello@360gsp.com.

Top Black Friday Shopping Tips to Avoid a Financial Hangover

Black Friday has become an unstoppable retail phenomenon in the last few years, with approximately £2bn spent in shops and online in just 24 hours last year. TV and radio, adverts, mailshots and newspaper inserts are encouraging us to embark on the practice of shopping until we drop. However, we lose sight of the financial shock that follows the spending spree, when we check our bank account or the credit card bill hits our doormats just before Christmas.

Do not despair. It is possible to show restraint and become a more rational shopper. Whether you are planning to head to the high street today for Black Friday, or fire up your laptop on Cyber Monday, all you have to do is remember these 5 basic rules.

360-gsp-1234

  • Identify the Real Need

Don’t waste your money buying what you don’t need. For example, if your PC is old or slow and you are thinking of buying a brand new one, why don’t you upgrade your existing PC by replacing its hard drive with an SSD? You can also add more RAM to speed things up – this will give your current machine a lease of life and save you a considerable amount of cash.

  • Be open to ‘Non-Branded’ Items

Branded product becomes famous by second-hand advertising, and non-branded products are often of equal quality as the branded ones. Check out the reviews of such Non-Branded items and you will be surprised how good (or Bad) they are.

122

  • Explore Outlet Deals

When it comes to shopping, few can match an outlet shopping centre. Amazing sales, massive discounts, and significant savings all around in one place. The London Designer Outlet, for example, is based right next to 360 GSP premises. Sony, Samsung, Vodafone and other tech companies are based there, providing exciting promotions. So, save your money and go to #LDOBlackFriday.

  • Services May Offer Better Value

Rethink Black Friday. Don’t shop large retailers unless you are buying exactly what you need. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are also here to give you other deals which offer better value and are more productive. For instance, if you are ready for a pre-Christmas tone-up session, or if you are just looking to score some discounts on workout classes, you have plenty of options to choose from, such as the 75% joining off promoted by Better Gym across the UK. If you are interested in tech or IT, you may also get a good discounted year’s subscription to Microsoft One Drive or a CCNA: Routing & Switching online training course at 360 GSP.

360-gsp

  • Invest in your Career

Black Friday can also be an opportunity to enhance your career, diversifying your skill set through some industry-focused training. Check deals and promotions across the web and get enrolled for a professional training combined with academic learning, so you will be able to acquire the hands-on practical experience you need to work in a professional real-world enterprise environment. If you would like to pursue a career in IT, 360 GSP has released few can’t-miss promotions! Make an enquiry today because seats are limited and it’s First Come First Served!

The Data Centre Transformation

Business development and technology progress during the last ten years have driven a profound transformation in the way data centres are organised and governed. Virtualization, architecture based upon the use of services, big data, and cloud are some of the determinant factors leading organisations to fully reconsider the way they take care of the applications, data, security, and access that are considered their crucial IT capabilities.

data-centre-123

The extensive embracement of virtualization in the data centre has led to extremely complicated workload administration, particularly when it comes to the network. As new applications are combined, network elaboration increases rapidly until service delivery is restricted and the customer experience quality reduced. These kinds of actions often results in a significant transformation of the data centre, both physical (servers, cooling, power and so on) and logical (software, databases, applications), with a special importance given to virtualization.

However, making these changes requires a comprehensive knowledge because an insufficiently designed or scarce data centre network may threaten several advantages expected from a data centre transformation project. When we talk about data centre transformation, we refer to the environment or architecture subjected to a change. This has different associations from a data centre migration, since transformation results in a diverse, improved architecture model once it is concluded. In both cases, the customer journey needs to be constructed with an introductory assessment which can then be used to educate both migration and transformation steps.

CERTIFICATIONS – As the demand for IT professionals with data centre virtualisation skills increases, it is essential to distinguish yourself in the market with a certification that validates your technical capabilities. Earning a VMware certification will help you stand out from other applicants. At 360 GSP, with our VMware vSphere training you will be able to Install, Configure, and Manage VMware vSphere. This course prepares you to administer a vSphere infrastructure for an organisation of any size and forms the foundation for most other VMware technologies in the software-defined data centre.

What Donald Trump’s election could mean for IT

As Donald Trump becomes the 45th President of the United States, attention is moving to how his policies will perform over his four, maybe eight-year spell in Washington. Trump has never been an IT pro, but what follows are some of the actions we can expect from his presidency.

trump-it

CYBERSECURITY & ENCRYPTION – With Trump’s victory, it is not clear yet what his administration would do on the issues of cybersecurity and encryption. During the presidential debates, he refused the idea that the attacks against the Democratic National Committee were carried out or mutely accepted by the Russian authority. However, Trump’s cybersecurity plan remains weak. It just demands for an “immediate review of all US cyber defenses and vulnerabilities, including critical infrastructure, by a Cyber Review Team of individuals from the military, law enforcement, and the private sector.”

BROADBAND – Trump’s presidency could drive new changes to Internet service providers regulations. The Federal Communications Commission’s net neutrality laws could be reversed or weakened. Two years ago, the then Republican candidate tweeted “Obama’s attack on the internet is another top down power grab. Net neutrality is the Fairness Doctrine. Will target conservative media.”

APPLE ISSUE –  Few months ago, Donald Trump sent a message to Cupertino’s CEO Tim Cook during a speech at the University of Virginia: if elected, Apple should start leaving China and making all its devices in the United States. Following Trump election win, Cook claimed “to be confident that Apple’s North Star hasn’t changed” and that they “will move forward together.”

US Election 2016 and digital insecurity

America is ready to vote for its next President. As usual, the US election, held once every 4 years, takes place on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November, as spelled out in the US Constitution. The battle between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will finally reach its climax, but security experts from the University of Michigan have warned that hackers could disrupt the election process in key States.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are tightening their grips on the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations.

It is known that the US Department of Homeland Security, in addition to carrying out cyber tests on voting systems across the country, also have security experts on stand-by on election day in case irregularities are spotted. Furthermore, US intelligence officials recently blamed Russian-linked hackers known as Strontium as a responsible for recent politically motivated hacking incidents.

360-gsp123

However, election officials are aware of potential vulnerabilities but, although no security precautions can completely eliminate risk, paper records are less vulnerable to manipulation and can be used to verify results.

A Meet the Threat document published by the US National Governors Association earlier elaborates the steps governors should take for the election tomorrow. It has a set of security questions for governors to tick off plus recommended measures to ensure there is adequate data back-up on paper copies and compact discs.

How the IoT will change the Data Centre Industry

The Internet of Things is poised to make major changes to enterprise infrastructure, and the data centre industry needs to evolve in this new era. Basically, the IoT will help to destroy the walls between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT), allowing unstructured machine-generated data to be analysed for insights that will drive improvements.

data centre

SMART DATA CENTRE – The emerging smart data centre will not only support the application requests of associated devices, but also authorise and control the different SaaS, PaaS and IaaS models to adequately support the various analytics processes. Obviously, everything will happen in real time and automation will soon become essential in both connected data centre and automobile industry.

NEW IoT MODEL – This IoT model will create a data operating environment that incorporates virtually everything around us, and maybe even inside us, to the point that this will create data centres that are assembled and disposed like transformers. These changes to the data centre will naturally require new skill sets among the IT workforce and new positions will be available in the IT industry.

360313

CERTIFICATIONS – As the demand for IT professionals with data centre virtualisation skills increases, it is essential to distinguish yourself in the market with a certification that validates your technical capabilities. Earning a VMware certification will help you stand out from other applicants. At 360 GSP, with our VMware vSphere training you will be able to Install, Configure, and Manage VMware vSphere.
