2016 salary boosts: Cloud, Security, Networking at the top of the table

Good news for people that are working in IT or would like to start their career in this area. According to a Computerworld’s survey, IT workers proclaimed an average increase of salary of 3.9 percent this year. Simply amazing, if we consider that this is the highest year-over-year gain that Computerworld has seen in its annual survey since 2001.

Below the top 10 hottest IT fields when it comes to salary along with their 2016 pay raise. The data comes from the USA, but the trend is likely to be similar in the rest of the world:

  • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) – 5%
  • Cloud computing – 4.8%
  • Security – 4.6%
  • Web design/development – 4.6%
  • Business intelligence/analytics – 4.2%
  • Networking – 4.2%
  • Application development – 4.0%
  • Data centre management – 3.9%
  • General IT – 3.9%
  • Help desk/IT support – 3.6%

The high rankings for cloud and security should come as no surprise: the survey reveals an average annual salary of $62,000 for network administrators across the USA. At the top of the range, network architects pull down an average of $112,000 and it looks like individuals with Cisco CCIE will continue to command the highest salaries.

Data centre management is also a top salary draw: the vendors selling cloud services need talent for managing their data centres too. In addition, new business models such as streaming services demand data centre expertise.
