US Election 2016 and digital insecurity

America is ready to vote for its next President. As usual, the US election, held once every 4 years, takes place on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November, as spelled out in the US Constitution. The battle between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will finally reach its climax, but security experts from the University of Michigan have warned that hackers could disrupt the election process in key States.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are tightening their grips on the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations.

It is known that the US Department of Homeland Security, in addition to carrying out cyber tests on voting systems across the country, also have security experts on stand-by on election day in case irregularities are spotted. Furthermore, US intelligence officials recently blamed Russian-linked hackers known as Strontium as a responsible for recent politically motivated hacking incidents.

However, election officials are aware of potential vulnerabilities but, although no security precautions can completely eliminate risk, paper records are less vulnerable to manipulation and can be used to verify results.

A Meet the Threat document published by the US National Governors Association earlier elaborates the steps governors should take for the election tomorrow. It has a set of security questions for governors to tick off plus recommended measures to ensure there is adequate data back-up on paper copies and compact discs.
