Digital Marketing salary guide: How much can you earn?

The Digital Marketing industry continues to enjoy enormous growth as an increasing number of businesses, both big and small, start to focus their marketing efforts online. Digital Marketing experts are consequently in high demand with many employers prepared to pay a premium for candidates possessing the right skills and experience. So what is the average Digital Marketing salary in the UK and how much can you expect to earn as you start to climb the career ladder?

Digital Marketing salary trends

The average Digital Marketing salary naturally depends on the role, level of entry, location and company you work for. A 2017 Digital Marketing salary guide compiled by recruitment experts Hudson, for example, revealed that entry-level Digital Marketing roles in the UK can pay anything between £23,000 and £32,000. However this does exclude internships and apprenticeships which usually offer a more basic wage.

Digital Marketing is still evolving as an industry, meaning its path for career progression remains somewhat undefined. But as with any other sector, salaries only increase as digital marketers start to hone their skills and take on more responsibility. Payscale’s Digital Marketing salary guide currently puts the average salary for a UK-based Digital Marketing Manager at just under £32,000. But this can vary if the role requires an area of specialisation. Job review website Glassdoor, for example, say the average salary for a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Manager is slightly higher, standing at £35,525.

Digital Marketing spend is expected to hit almost £12bn in the UK alone this year with an increasing number of companies starting to take advantage of various advancements in technology to promote their products and services. And as Digital Marketing budgets increase so does the need for experienced professionals with a proven track record of success. This is evident in the fact that the Head of Digital Marketing at a business can now command an annual salary between £60,000 and £80,000, according to the Glassdoor Digital Marketing salary guide.
