Amazon Web Services: How hard is it to get AWS Certified?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to dominate the cloud computing market with the likes of Microsoft Azure and Google struggling to keep pace. Employers are consequently seeking IT professionals with proven AWS credentials and hands-on experience of the platform. But Amazon aren’t handing out AWS Certifications on a whim. Candidates will need to spend a considerable amount of time preparing for their exams.

How much, of course depends on an individual’s existing familiarity with Amazon Web Services and the level of certification being sought. Amazon now offer four tiers of certification requiring increasing levels of expertise and dedication, as we will now explain.

Foundation Amazon Web Services Certifications

The most basic AWS Certification is the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam. This is intended for individuals who can effectively demonstrate an overall understanding of Amazon Web Services. Amazon recommend candidates have six months of AWS experience in any role and at least a basic understanding of relevant IT services.

Prior to attempting the Cloud Practitioner exam – or any AWS Certification for that matter – it would be a good idea to join us for one of our free AWS webinars. A cloud industry expert will talk you through the essentials of Amazon Web Services and help you to decide whether it is the right career for you.

Associate Amazon Web Services Certifications

Associate-level exams validate technical role-based knowledge of Amazon’s cloud with different certifications available for Architects, Developers and SysOps Administrators. Many IT professionals choose to kick-off their Amazon Web Services career by sitting the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam. To pass this certification candidates must be able to effectively demonstrate knowledge of how to architect and deploy secure and robust applications on Amazon Web Services. Amazon recommend candidates have at least one year of hands-on experience designing AWS systems.

However 360 GSP can prepare you to pass the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam in just six days of weekend classes. Professional Amazon Web Services Certifications

Professional Certifications test advanced AWS skills and are only available to candidates who have completed the relevant Associate Certification. Amazon recommend candidates have two or more years of hands-on experience designing and deploying cloud architecture on Amazon Web Services prior to attempting the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional exam, for example.

Specialty Amazon Web Services Certifications

Amazon now offer two types of Specialty AWS Certification: AWS Certified Big Data and AWS Certified Advanced Networking. These certifications validate technical knowledge for Amazon Web Services experts who also possess expertise in specific technical areas. They are only intended for candidates with at least one role-based AWS Certification plus deep real-world proficiency in an area of specialisation.
