How do I start my programming career?

With great earning potential and job opportunities aplenty, programming is becoming a popular career choice for people from all kinds of backgrounds, with varying degrees of experience. The dynamic nature of the industry means there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to starting a programming career. So read on as we explore some of the different paths available to you.

How do I start my programming career?

Self learning

It has never been easier to teach yourself a new skill. There are a range of online learning resources available to anyone looking to launch a programming career, often with minimal financial commitment involved. But self-studying isn’t for everyone and takes a lot of discipline. Coding issues can be complicated and frustrating to resolve when you are just starting out. So if you think your motivation may begin to dwindle when you hit a roadblock and Google can’t provide the answers, it might not be the best option for you.

University

Some people choose to go down the traditional university route and pursue a degree in computing or a related subject like computer science, mathematics of software development. Degrees typically take three to four years to complete, are very costly and there is no guarantee of a job at the end of it all. Some employers also believe that university courses can tend to focus on theory rather than the valuable hands-on experience needed to launch a programming career.

Apprenticeships

You may be able to get into software development through an apprenticeship. Understandably, competition for places is extremely high and, unless you have already developed some programming skills, your application is unlikely to be taken seriously. Similarly, some companies may accept you onto their graduate training schemes without a degree but normally require at least an understanding of the fundamentals of programming and software development.

Bootcamps

Coding bootcamps are a popular way for aspiring software developers to fast-track their programming career. Usually requiring three months of full-time study, they can cost upwards of £3,000. That’s a lot of money to spend considering you are unlikely to be earning during that time. You may be lucky and find a bootcamp which provides you with extensive support and lets you learn at your own pace. However most bootcamps will cover an intensive syllabus over a short period of time, meaning trainers will be unable to slow down or backtrack, potentially leaving you with gaps in your knowledge.
